A warm welcome to Kids Club Kampala

Dear The Mango Tree Supporter,

Thank you so much for visiting us and finding out more about what we do. We’re so delighted to be able to continue Willie and Gail’s legacy by helping them fulfil their promise to support educational journeys to vulnerable children in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. We are really excited about this opportunity to further our collective impact and support more children across East Africa. Having visited Kenya, and from our conversations with The Mango Tree UK team, we are confident that our vision, values and principles closely align.

We have pulled together some further information about who Kids Club Kampala are, and we look forward to getting to know you too over the next year.

We hope that you’ll be able to attend one of our special joint events in March.

Who we are

Kids Club Kampala was founded in 2009, and we help vulnerable kids in the slums of Uganda survive and thrive. We provide for both their immediate needs and strengthen their futures through Community Outreach, Protecting, Educating and Skilling programmes. Our vision is to see lives transformed, communities empowered and poverty reduced throughout Uganda.

In the last 15 years we have supported over 309,000 vulnerable children and families.

We are registered both in Uganda and the UK. Similarly to The Mango Tree, our UK team works in partnership with the team in Uganda who passionately lead and implement the projects which are a lifeline to some of the most vulnerable children and communities in the world. From our foundation we have been community-led and community-driven, responding to community needs with effective, sustainable programmes.

We take a holistic approach, ensuring children and families’ basic needs (food, safety) are met so they are able to fully engage with and benefit from education and skills development - to bring about long-term sustainable changes in their lives, and support them to move from surviving to thriving.

History of Kids Club Kampala

Kids Club Kampala started when Olivia and Corrie travelled to Uganda to volunteer for an organisation linked to their church back in 2007, when they were both 18. There, they met Samuel Wambayo, a Ugandan national, who showed them what life was like for children living within the slums of Kampala. For the next few years, Olivia and Corrie continued to travel back to Uganda every summer, with money they had fundraised and gifts for the community such as footballs, toothbrushes, school supplies, books, shoes and much more.

In 2009, Kids Club Kampala (KCK) was registered as both a Ugandan NGO and a UK charity and Sam started recruiting community volunteers in Uganda to help run the community projects. Since then, KCK has gone from strength to strength, and has provided school fees to over 1,130 children, as well as supported over 4,000 young people with counselling, provided vital skills training to over 1,000 out of school children and unemployed adults, and served over 45 million meals to to families during COVID-19.

Our Change Makers

Polly*

Polly joined Kids Club Kampala as a sponsored child after the sudden loss of her father. Her mother is a single mother who was unable to work due to her health. Polly's sponsors supported her through primary and secondary school, and during her last summer holiday she decided to join our Tailoring and Knitting Project to gain lifelong skills. Her sponsors then continued her support through university. After receiving such incredible support, Polly decided she wanted to give back and so she began volunteering her time to provide counselling children through our Saturday Kids Clubs. Her story of change is inspirational to all.
