Today is the Global Day of Parents! We’re celebrating parents and caregivers everywhere, and recognising the vital role families play in every child’s life. Whether connected by birth or by choice, parents provide children with care, stability, and a sense of belonging.

At the heart of our work is the belief that every child deserves to grow up in a loving family. This blog post explains how Kids Club Kampala supports children to reunite with safe, caring families through the Ewafe Project.

Rebuilding families through our Ewafe Project

Our Ewafe Project supports abandoned and at-risk children living in the slums of Kampala, with the primary goal of reuniting them with their families. We advocate for family-based care, working to ensure that every child has the opportunity to experience the love and safety that family life provides.

When a child is referred to the Ewafe Project, they are cared for at our Ewafe home while our team of social workers start searching for their immediate and extended family members. This process involves tracing relatives, assessing the home, and working closely with caregivers to ensure the child can return to a nurturing environment. Where possible, we develop and implement tailored reintegration plans to support the child’s return home.

Our support does not end at reunification. We continue to follow up with families to help strengthen relationships, address challenges, and ensure the child’s long-term safety and wellbeing. Each successful reintegration represents hope and the opportunity for a brighter future.

Where family reunification is not possible, for example if a home environment is unsafe or relatives cannot be traced, we aim to place children with trained foster families who can offer long-term support.

Each family receives a care package, including food, clothing, and educational sponsorship, along with ongoing support from our social workers. Foster families play a vital role in providing children with love and encouragement. Through regular follow-ups and guidance, we continue to support children and their caregivers.

Every child’s situation is unique, which is why our social workers take the time to carefully assess each case and make decisions based on what is truly in the child’s best interests. Our goal is not only to place children in safe homes, but to help families thrive.

Our impact

Since its launch in 2013, our Ewafe Project has rescued over 260 children, and successfully reintegrated almost 200 into family-based care.

So far this year, 11 children have been reintegrated with loving families through the Ewafe Project:

  • 6 children were reunited with grandparents

  • 3 children were reintegrated with parents

  • 1 child was resettled with an older sibling

  • 1 child was placed with a foster family

One of these children is Amelie*, whose journey reminds us just how life-changing the love and support of a family can be.

Amelie’s story

In 2023, Amelie* (aged 10) was living with her mother. One day, she was asked to sell soap on the streets to help earn money. As Amelie travelled further from home, she became lost and was unable to find her way back. A kind passerby noticed she was distressed, and stepped in to help. Through a referral from the local authorities, Amelie was brought to the Ewafe Project for care.

During her stay at the Ewafe home, Amelie showed respect, resilience, and a strong willingness to help others, often assisting staff with daily activities. She also received support to attend school, ensuring she has access to consistent education. Amelie said:

“I used to sell soap, and I couldn’t have enough time to go to school. But now, am happy that I am back in school.”

Our social work team conducted family tracing for Amelie in 2023, but were unable to locate any of her relatives. In 2025, following counselling and careful assessment, Amelie was matched with a potential foster family.

In February 2026, Amelie moved in with a loving foster family who embraced her as one of their own and committed to providing her with love, care, and support. We will continue to carry out regular follow-ups to monitor her wellbeing and progress as she settles into her new home.

Help us place more children with loving families

Families help children feel valued and safe, giving them the foundation they need to look towards the future with hope.

If you would like to help us support more children like Amelie, your support would make a real difference. A gift of £50 could provide an emergency care package for a child admitted to our Ewafe home, giving them essential care and comfort when they need it most. Thank you.
