Fuelling futures through our Community Feeding Project

At Kids Club Kampala, we believe no child should go hungry - and the school holidays are no exception. In May, we launched our Community Feeding Project with the goal of bringing hope and nourishment to children during the school break. With the help of our generous supporters and dedicated volunteers, we turned a time of uncertainty into a holiday of health and happiness.

The challenge
For many children living in Kampala’s slums, the school holidays are not a time of respite and joy, but a time of hunger. Children living in communities like Naguru, Katanga and Namuwongo rely heavily on the daily school meals we provide at our Encouraging Education Project, meaning that the school holidays leave many vulnerable to malnutrition. Despite parents’ efforts, families often struggle to provide meals for their children when school terms pause, due to the rising cost of living. This lack of nourishment threatens the physical health, emotional wellbeing and development of children in these communities.
The project in action
To ensure no child was left behind during the most recent school holidays, from 3rd-26th May, Kids Club Kampala transformed its Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in Naguru, Katanga and Namuwongo into vibrant Community Kitchens. In these warm and welcoming spaces, children were able to receive nutritious meals every day during the school break. Our incredible community volunteers and dedicated staff came together to pull off this life-changing initiative. The children enjoyed fresh, healthy and comforting meals.
Moses*, age 13, used to dread the school holidays because food was so scarce. His mother told us:
“Now, he has really enjoyed this holiday because he was receiving daily meals from Kids Club Kampala.”
For children like Moses, a daily meal brought relief and the chance to enjoy his school holidays, just like every child should.

Our impact
The results of the Community Feeding Project speak for themselves …
309 children were reached from across a range of our projects: Encouraging Education; Child Sponsorship; Football Project; Saturday Kids Clubs, as well as other children in the communities.
3,373 meals were provided in just over 3 weeks.
We received lots of positive feedback from parents saying the project lifted the financial burden during a difficult time.
The project sparked community spirit! It wasn’t just about providing food, but about creating a safe space for children to feel happy and cared for.
Beyond the plate, this initiative will foster a lasting impact across the community. Free from the burden of food insecurity, children in Kampala will be able to gather, laugh, and play without worry. The Community Feeding Project has shown that when resources are placed in local hands, the impact multiples.

The success of our Community Feeding Project demonstrates just how powerful communities can be when they unite to tackle the issues that matter most to them. In three weeks, we were able to reach 309 children. Yet, the need remains. Thousands more children still face hunger each time schools close. This project proves that with more support, we can reach them. We have laid the foundation for something sustainable, scalable and deeply rooted in community resilience. Together, we can ensure that every child in Kampala has the chance to grow, thrive and enjoy a healthy meal!
For just £10, you can provide 10 nutritious meals to children in Kampala. Can you make a donation to help us tackle holiday hunger and fuel the future?
