Luke* is 15 years old and lives in Katanga, one of the biggest slums in Kampala. His mum is a single mum with poor health, and she struggles to provide for him and his brothers and sisters. For this reason, he sadly dropped out of school a few years ago due to a lack of money for the school fees.
Last year, Luke enrolled into our carpentry workshop vocational training programme. Here he learnt new skills in carpentry, and had a safe place to go to everyday. He was also able to use his skills to make money for his family, through selling the items that he made every day at the carpentry workshop.
Luke loves playing football and every evening after he had finished at the carpentry workshop, he would come along to the KCK football coaching sessions in Katanga. Under the expert tutelage of his football coach, Luke soon rose to become KCK Katanga Football Team’s star player. The Katanga football team have been taking part in many different matches and tournaments throughout Uganda. They have been doing so well that they were recently promoted to the First Division of the Kampala District League.
During a recent football match, Luke was scouted by a talent scout whilst playing for his Katanga team. Due to his great football talent, the scout offered him a fully funded scholarship to one of the most prestigious boarding schools in the whole of Kampala!
Luke of course accepted and is very much looking forward to going back to school, and to being able to continue playing football every day! He now has dreams of becoming a professional football player in the future and being able to provide for his family.
