Feeding Programme Update

In Summer 2012, our feeding programme changed from feeding the children just once a month to feeding them every week. We are already seeing real and lasting changes in the lives of the children who have been benefitting through this project.

This means that every single week of the year, all children at every Kids Club Kampala centre who attends children’s activities has received a hot, nutritious meal. This is approximately 4000 children a week who would otherwise have gone without food, thanks to Kids Club Kampala

Studies show that at least 9 million Ugandans are food insecure and 5.8 million are malnourished.

Most poor families in Uganda just eat one meal in the evening, if they can afford to. That means for the majority of children who attend KCK activities, they have not eaten breakfast and would not otherwise eat lunch on a Saturday and spend most of the day hungry.

This increase in our Feeding Programme over the last 9 months is making a big difference to children's health and well-being and we are already seeing lasting results. Children no longer lack energy, and are able to join in all the games and activities. Less children are getting sick regularly, as their immune system is being built up. Children's behaviour has increased, and sitting together to eat a meal every week has built up friendships, social skills and trust between the children and the volunteers.

We have also seen the number of children who attend KCK regularly increase, and parents encouraging their children to attend and have the chance to just play and be kids for a few hours each week, along with knowing they will not go hungry.

In the future we would love to provide these meals more regularly in the week to children at every Kids Club centre who needs it. We are also planning on providing food parcels for the neediest families who struggle to feed themselves and their children.

  • It costs just £5 to provide food for 10 children for a week.
  • To feed our 4000 children for a day costs just £300.
  • That means to feed all of our children a hot, nutritious meal every day for a week it costs £2000.
