With the EUROS in full swing everyone’s minds have turned to football and here at Kids Club Kampala we are no different. We have gone football mad, but its not because of the EUROS, it’s because our communities, the boys who make up our Katanga football team and the 31 other teams we have around the city LOVE football. The joy of the game is not only brightening up people’s days but is also giving boys from the slums a platform from which to show off their talents, develop their skills and feel part of something positive. Kampala’s slums can be a very dangerous place, notorious for gangs, substance misuse and violent crime. Young boys, especially those who do not go to school, have very few options for engaging in positive activities. Our football project provides them with a safe space to go and a chance to improve their self-esteem, skills, teamwork and discipline, giving them a hope for the future.
For many years now Kids Club Kampala has been running an internal KCK league with 32 teams competing from 18 different communities. This league culminates in a final and an overall Kids Club Kampala Champion each year. The Katanga boys team have consistently shown themselves to be the best team having won the KCK Champion title on several occasions. This year we decided to register this team with the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) and they entered the junior league. Amazingly the boys entered the competition with full force and have already made it to the 1st Division! This is a dream come true for the boys on the team and something they never thought would be possible. We are so proud of these boys, their hard work and determination, and all that they have achieved so far.
These boys in our Katanga football team currently play in rented or second hand kits with broken football boots or without proper equipment at all. We would love to provide them with an official football strip so that they can proudly represent Kids Club Kampala and their community as a whole in the First Division. It costs just £30 to kit out one player, can you help? Check out our Kit Campaign and please donate if you can.
