Changing lives through football

Kids in Uganda love football, especially the kids at Kids Club Kampala! So when the boys from one of our KCK centres approached us and asked if we could help them with training and coaching to develop their football skills, we thought it was a great idea. We launched our football programme at the beginning of 2011 at Namavundu centre, and since then this project has grown extensively and we now have over 30 football teams in total across all of our centres.

Life is tough for teenage boys in Uganda, especially if you don’t go to school and live in one of the most dangerous slums in Kampala. Our Football Programme not only gives our boys something fun to do and somewhere safe to go where they keep out of danger and trouble; but also gives them hope, confidence and self-esteem as they are encouraged in their talents and know that they have someone who believes in them and their dreams.

We hold regular football matches between different centres and other organisations. These matches are great fun for the boys; they can meet each other and show off their skills. This summer, a match took place between KCK Namavundu centre and Joy for Children. It was great fun, despite the rain, and ended in a 2-2 draw.

Also this summer, KCK entered 2 teams into the CRANE Network Under-13s Football Tournament (www.cranenetwork.org) and guess what? KCK Katanga team won!! I am so, so proud of our boys, especially as most of our players don't even have football boots!

Thank you to all of our fantastic KCK football volunteers for dedicating their time and energy to training and coaching the teams in their local communities. Thank you also to Kits4Causes (www.kits4causes.org) for the donations of vital football kits for our teams.

Thank you Kits4Causes for the football kits!

If you would like to help with this project we are always looking for donations of footballs, sport equipment, pumps, kits, bibs, and boots. And if any of you keen footballers out there would like to volunteer with us, meet the boys and help out with coaching our teams then please get in touch!
