Kampala’s slums can be a very dangerous place, notorious for gangs, substance misuse and violent crime. Young boys, especially those who do not go to school, have very few options for engaging in positive activities. Our football project provides them with a safe space to go and a chance to improve their self-esteem, skills, teamwork and discipline, giving them a hope for the future. Our Football Project gives teenagers in Kampala’s slums something fun to do and somewhere safe to go where they keep out of danger and trouble, along with building their confidence and self-esteem. They also have a chance to learn vital skills in teamwork and discipline, as they are encouraged in their talents and know that they have someone who believes in them and their dreams.
Each of our Kids Club Kampala centres has a football team, and last year over 200 teenagers took part in our football project. Each team trains hard throughout the week and regularly competes with other KCK teams. We also have a central Kids Club Kampala football team which is currently competing in the Kampala Junior League first division. Many of these players don’t go to school and having football to focus on gives them a sense of purpose and self-worth. Thank you everyone who donated last year towards our kit appeal – our central KCK team now look so smart when they take part in matches!
Football is great at uniting people from different backgrounds and walks of life. It is also a great way of reaching people and engaging with teenagers who maybe wouldn’t want to come along to our Saturday Kids Clubs or counselling sessions. It is also a fun activity for children to engage in and just enjoy being kids, away from the worries of their everyday lives. That is why our football project is an important part of what we do.
Last year we unfortunately had to cancel our annual inter-centre football team tournament due to not having enough funding to be able to run it. This was such a shame as for so many of our players, this is something they look forward to every year. This year we are hoping to hold a one-day football gala where our different teams will compete against each other throughout the day to see who is the overall winner. However, we need your help to be able to do so. If you would like to contribute to enable this day to go ahead, you can do so here.
Also, if you would like to donate any football kits, boots or balls then please get in touch with us as we are always looking for donations of these items. Finally, if you are interested in coming out to Uganda to help with our football projects, coaching teams and meeting some of our amazing players, then please contact us. Thank you.
